(More customer reviews)I bought this Audiovox DT102A DVD player with the car docking station set up brand new at Circuit City and had them install it 4 1/2 years ago. We also bought a pair of headphones and it came with a nice carry bag as well.
My family has logged hundreds of hours on this player while traveling thousands of minivan miles over this time. It is durable and the coolest feature is that it pops easily out of the docking station to take into the hotel room, or wherever else to utilize as a true portable DVD player. Now how smart is that?!
I paid about $900 for the whole set-up 4 1/2 years ago and am now buying a new car and searching for another one. It was worth every cent then and they are going for a great price now--wow!
You will not regret this if you like the portability option.

(More customer reviews)It all began after a few hours worth of use, the head began to jump and thrash inside the unit. Brand new player and a new DVD. I called Audiovox and was told that DVD was scratched or dirty. I repeated that I had tried several DVDs fresh out of their cases with the same results. OK, then the tech decided the head was dirty and I was instructed that I must buy and use a DVD head cleaner, a disc that looks like a false eyelash has been glued to it. I mentioned that this DVD player was brand new and nothing had been allowed to near the head. In the end, I bought a cleaner and the problem persisted.
The second call to Audiovox went the same, though I told them it happen when using brand new DVDs, the DVD must be scratched or dirty. Once we got past that, the head was dirty, though the unit was new and I had now used a head cleaner. Eventually this tech caved in and told me what to do to send the unit in for repair.
Over three weeks later we received a refurbished player tossed into a box without the batteries for the headphones and the remote. A quick call to the support department got me the watch battery for the remote, but they forgot the headphone batteries.
This one seemed to work fine, until the night we tried to watch Return of the King, halfway through... whirrrr... clunk... clunk... burp... clunk... whirrrr... (It really hates the transition point on dual layer DVDs)
Another phone call to Audiovox and the same response, "the DVD or the head must be dirty"... I gave up...

As others have said, the sound really is weak and "tinny" and unless you can keep your head still for an entire movie, the wireless headphones are worthless. Plus the fact that you may be gambling on getting a junk player (If you do, save yourself the hassle and three week wait by taking it straight back to the store.) caused me to rate this player so low.

(More customer reviews)I puchased this a couple of weeks ago and recently had them installed in a BMW X3 (SUV). These are a great value for aftermarket dvd players, I did a lot of review/research and nothing beat this deal. They look and play great; I'm sure they will get a ton of quality viewing time for the kids and hopefully a little bit of peace for the parents in the front seat. I tried out the game feature and they are pretty old school, I wouldn't expect these to entertain serious gamer type kids for very long, but it's a nice added feature that most didn't have. Product also comes with a remote control which is a nice if you have little ones that can't operate the video's on their own. I'm not a handy person, so I called around for installation and in my area (SF) labor is pretty expensive (I had several quotes for $250); so I purchased an installation card from Crutchfield for $160. I would recommend this option if you're like me, they will hook you up with a local install shop and mine turned out very professional. My only minor ding about the product is the post of the headrest are smaller than the factory post so the shop had to compensate for that, basically using electrically tape to make the product snug. Anyway overall I was able to get a really nice DVD system for a excellent price and very happy with the purchase.

(More customer reviews)I picked up a set of gray units from OnFair and did a quick installation myself in an Odyssey. Unfortunately I have the dark gray interior and these units are light gray. They're not that noticeable but I went into this knowing they wouldn't be a perfect match. Running the cables through the seat back are very easy in this vehicle, but power can be a pain if you're not comfortable with finding and tapping off of an accessory source.
My first issue was that the head rest posts are very narrow so you have to use some supplied sleeves that make the posts a bit fatter and take up more space within the head rest holes within the seat. The problem was that even with the sleeves installed I could not raise the head rest and get it to latch into place. Meaning, if you raise the head rest it doesn't stay. This isn't a biggie for me as I never use or raise it anyhow but for those who do, you'll lose this functionality cause the little mechanism that's supposed to come into contact with the head rest post doesn't reach the post due to its slim design.
The designers thought of just about everything in terms of functionality in that audio for either A or B channel for separation with head sets works well and the FM transmitter works mostly pretty good so that you can hear it in the car's stereo. Yet, I found that someone can't be listening on one head rest with head phones while the other transmits cause we'd get some interference in the head phones. Also, you need to make sure that both head rests are NOT transmitting on the same channel even if the same movie is being shown on both cause you'll get interference as well. The ability to watch different movies on each unit or watch the same movie on both is very cool and worth running the cables for, but use only one for an audio source or make sure you're using different channels for each unit.
The units have a limited field of broadcast so if you're too far to one side or if you're in the back seat with the units on front seats...you'll most likely incur audio interference. Also, as the seat backs are tilted you'll see the screen appear dim as the viewing angle seems to be limited. Fortunately I'm more upright by my wife's seat was tilted a bit more than mine and I noticed one of our kids stooping down to get a better viewing angle.
As someone else mentioned, it's information overload with all of the buttons. My 8 yr old has them down though in terms of quickly setting them, but this is a hassle cause you have to set the channel to broad cast on as well as enable the input of the 2nd unit if you're watching the first unit's output every time you turn the car on. There are a lot of features but I guess it's better than having to navigate an onscreen menu. Speaking of navigating, the remotes are very small and thin. But they too contain way too many buttons. It makes usage and navigation in the dark impossible for both the head rest buttons and remote controller.
I also opted for a 3rd set of head phones. Beware that the additional head sets are not the same was what comes with the head rests and do not fit over the ears like the ones packaged with the head rests. They also have limited adjustments so do not fit well on little heads. Fortunately I found that not all 3 kids were wanting to wear them so this became a non issue, which means I probably didn't need them...but still a disappointment.
Finally, shipping was very slow as the units were on back order. We wanted them for an upcoming trip and I received them 2 days before departure, which was over 3 weeks from when ordered.
Now, enough of the bashing and on to the good stuff. I think the units are pretty well made and the screen/hinge mechanism feels solid. I did not see any dead pixels (yet) and the color is bright and vivid. I picked up the game pack and tried a few. I think the inclusion of it is pretty kewl and the games are cheap entertainment (although the controllers feel pretty lightweight). They did a nice job with providing the necessary cabling and installation is pretty straight forward. The packaged head phones that come with the head rests are comfortable and fit little heads nicely (skip the additional ones). The range of features is amazing in terms of how you can watch movies and distribute audio. Speaking of audio, the built-in speakers within the head rests are of moderate quality, but it does provide another option. I have yet to try, but you also have other forms of input such as for USB and SD which again provides additional flexibility. Lastly, for the price, I think the feature set out weighs all of the negative items I noted and makes these units a steal. If I had paid a lot more then the above noted areas of concern would become really big issues and this would be a 2 star rating. But when factoring in the cost this really a spectacular buy.

(More customer reviews)Before I go into details, I want to mention that I'm very pleased with the purchase although I rated it as 4-stars.
I have serious doubts buying this one since it has no reviews.
I've installed these in my car, connected to media center and use two IR headsets. The system worked great for the past two weeks and we finally can drive in peace for long distances.
Build: The quality of the product surprised me. I expected it to be less - according to the price. The headrest itself is done from leather-like material. It has hice feel and looks good in the car. I have grey interior and black headrests are OK there (it's not really dark black). The monitor appearance is great. Buttons are small and work well. The cables and the connectors are OK as well. You even have some filter box on the DC wires and the plug.
Screen: The description states 1400x230 pixels. Well. I have no idea what 1400 means, but the picture is good. The quality remains good even if you connect both monitors to one DVD player thru V-connector. Kids have no problems with it.
Installation: Not really, but quite easy.
Some additional notes:
1. You can tilt the screen up and down together with the headrest. It is very convenient to the child since you can match the height, but I think that it creates some sort of safety hazard for you since the headrest does not really support your head. You cannot adjust both: the headrest to protect you and the monitor for convenient watching. Plus, you cannot really fix the headrest to resist car crash. I personally do not care, but other people might.
2. The description mentions two AV inputs. This is not completely true. You have the cable in the pole and the AV input at the front. I thought that I can connect two devices thru the pole cables since I don't really want anything connected to my front panel. I thought to have two media centers connected to both monitor, to allow the kids watching same/different movies by just changing AV input. This is impossible because in the pole you have two video inputs but ONLY ONE audio input. You can connect DVD and rear view camera. But who needs rear view camera on the rear seat. This is just stupid design. I gave 4 start only because of that.
3. I was not aware that IR connection does not have any frequencies... Therefore, the headsets receive signal from both monitors. So basically you cannot broadcast two different signals if you use IR.
4. Last note is you do not have car adapter. The monitors has two wires (red and black) that you have to connect to the car electrical system or buy the adapter yourself (additional 10$).

(More customer reviews)With a little research this headrest unit seems to be one of the best deals out there. As an Audio/Video afficionado, it is an attractive and tidy unit which comes with 3 different 'pleather' colors to match your interior. This is good because you can conceal it better from thieves. We got it for our 1 month old. Yes...he faces the rear & I was able to easily install it backwards (facing forward in the rear seat headrest holes. The included remote works well and has plenty of features...most importantly repeat. This allows the disc that is in to continuously play. It picks up right where it was when you turned off the ignition. So far little Henry has watched Baby Einstein's Poetry & Classical Music DVD about 20 times. Beware though, the onscreen lighting and action can be bothersome in your rearview mirror when travelling in the dark. You'll learn to ignore it. It is very easy to use and put the disc in & the remote is an added bonus. Installation can be a little tricky though, as the cables slide down through the headrest holes and into the interior of you seat. Our 2003 Pathfinder's seatback came off with a little enticing which allowed me to power it from the trunk plug. Most newer model autos have zipper / snap seatbacks which should allow relatively easy wiring. Note: Use electrical tape to secure ALL of the connections tight. The last thing you need in the middle of the interstate on that vacation trip is to have a wire jiggle loose! Take the time to install it securely. All in all it seems to be a great unit & I hope it lasts long enough so little Henry can drive & mom & dad can sit in the back & watch movies :o>

GPX BT780B 7 Inch LCD Portable TV/DVD/AM/FM Boombox Review

(More customer reviews)This unit has impressive audio for its price range and supports multiple audio formats. Unfortunately this unit will only play back DVDs in stretched wide-screen (16:9) format, meaning that if you want to watch DVDs recorded in 4:3 aspect ratio, you will have to put up with a world of elliptical circles and extra-wide people. I realize that some people are not as sensitive to this distortion as I am (art training will do that to you), but I had to return my BT780B because although the unit has a menu that offers 16:, 4:3PS (pan & scan) and 4:3LB (letter box), the selections have no effect on the display. I talked to GPX tech support about this, and they had no solution.
I had no problem with the small screen as my intended use was to sit it in front of me on the desk or table and watch instructional videos. The audio fidelity stereo imaging in this arrangement is excellent, unlike those fold-up DVD players with tiny underpowered speakers. The FM reception is quite good with a nice balance of selectivity and sensitivity for this price range, and it includes a mono option which is really necessary if you listen to distant FM transmitters where the hiss can ruin the stereo but the reception can be excellent on mono. I am in a fringe area for VHF TV reception but a couple local UHF stations came in clearly, even with the minimal antenna provided.
Since this small a screen will be watched at close reading distance, GPX would do well to upgrade the 7" screen resolution which is a bit grainy at watching distance, and of course fix the problem of not supporting 4:3 aspect ratio. Ideally, I would like the choice of watching 4:3 in either "pillarboxed" format or cropped top and bottom with a choice of scroll position, as different material benefits from different treatments. Meanwhile this is a good audio boombox with a 16:9 DVD capability only.
